The difference in the attitude towards online gambling between US states is growing strong these days. It has been evident since the introduction of the UIGEA that different states had different points of view on if it was necessary to make US online casinos illegal or not. Now Florida and Virginia are on the agenda.

Passions around New Jersey and probable legalization of online casinos there calm down. Now everyone is waiting impatiently what decision the Governor Chris Christie will make. At the same time players turn their looks towards two states, Florida and Virginia, where the position around online casinos in the USA is absolutely different.
Let’s start with positive news. Florida has announced, that if New Jersey fails to become the first US state with legal online casinos, then it may be Florida. The Daytona Beach News Journal reports that online poker may be legalized there as early as July 1, 2011. Main reason for such hasty decision is the necessity to cover budget deficit of $4 billion. Corresponding bill has already been introduced by the Democrat Joseph Abruzzo to be discussed at the next session, which will start in March, 8.
J. Abruzzo said in his interview to the journal: “We want to legalize it, regulate it and bring the revenue to Florida. To me it’s common sense to protect our players.” It is stated in the offer that it will be necessary to create portals for legal intrastate online poker playing. It is also added in the bill that up to three operators will receive necessary licences, and on probable candidate is already known. It’s Daytona Beach Kennel Club & Poker Room. Its manager, Daniel Francati, said, “I think it’ll help take Internet players and try to convert them into brick-and-mortar players. You always have a question when people are playing online for money. How do you know they’re paying if it isn’t regulated?”
As for Virginia, the attitude there is quite the opposite to the idea of making online casinos legal. It follows Washington guideline, and Clifford L. Athey Jr. proposed the bill close to the one existing in Washington. He offers to criminalize all forms of gambling, including lotteries and poker. It seems that the bill has got necessary support. At least the General Assembly has already passed the bill. There are also corresponding bills, which will regulate what games and at what time will be available for people at Internet clubs and cafes.
